Krauty Tekpop Assault | Honestly, I wouldn’t have downloaded this album if mo. hadn’t advice me to check the “Destination Cologne“-sampler. Monomatik are part of this sampler with their chart-breaking “The One With The Leadguitar”-tune which really got me. The German trio produces clever electronic dance music that borrows a lot from Pop and has an unique “handmade” feel.

All six tracks on “But We Made It So Far” are dance music in a way. So what’s special about the Monomen? The three guys from Cologne and Bochum have been around for more than ten years now, with albums and EPs at Ideology since 2005 and a handful of self-released CDs and vinyl. They started as a Drum & Bass act, discovering the sweet ambrosia of Pop music very soon. Since then, Monomatik refined their organic dance music by going into big naive melodies, decently bouncing rhythms and wonderful little sound surprises.

For instance, the whistling melodie in “The One Where Everybody Joins In” is funny and charming and makes you listen up. “The One With The Leadguitar” is a must-hear as well. Alongside a fuzzy guitar, the chorus brings up sweet memories of genuine (and strange) German popacts like La Düsseldorf and Trio (sic!). Like these acts, Monomatik don’t take themselves too serious and spice their music with whatever comes along. Fresh.

Monomatik - But we made it so far (EP)

English: Monomatik have a thing with figures going. All their release-numbers are divisible by twelve without remainder. And even though Monomatik is being formed by three people, the cover of their latest release, on which all of the six track-titles start off with "the one", shows a total of four faces. Maybe something like their version of the fifth Beatle.

Following the idea of their previous three EPs on iD.EOLOGY, Monomatik keep trying hard at gaining some romanticising aspects from a more and more technified environment on "But we made it so far". They transfer the bittersweet tone of British 80's indie-pop to minimalist electronic-tracks, adding the sound-aesthetics of old 8-bit computers along with synthpoppish vocal-bits and the grumbling of electric bass-guitars.

The resulting mixture of melancholy, alienation, euphoria and hope does not only creep over us because Monomatik know the tricks of the trade when it comes to indietronic. It also creeps over us because this EP is not only the latest, it's also going to be the very last release from Monomatik. But since we, too, know how to add up our figures, we refuse to accept that this fact is true any more than the fourth Monomatik member is real. Or the fifth Beatle. Nothing's over 'til it's over.

Deutsch: Monomatik haben's mit Zahlen. Stets sind ihre Releasenummern ohne Rest durch zwölf teilbar. Und obwohl Monomatik nur aus drei Personen bestehen, sieht man auf dem Cover ihrer neusten Veröffentlichung, deren sechs Tracktitel immer mit "the one" beginnen, insgesamt vier Gesichter. Vielleicht so etwas wie ihre Version des fünften Beatle.

Wie schon auf den drei vorangegangenen EPs sind Monomatik auch auf "But we made it so far" bemüht, einer zunehmend technisierten Umgebung eine romantisierende Betrachtungsweise abzugewinnen. Den bittersüßen Tonfall des britischen Indiepop der 80er übertragen sie auf minimalistische Elektroniktracks und versehen diese mit der Klangästhetik alter 8-Bit Computer, mit synthpoppigen Vocalschnipseln und dem Grummeln elektrischer Bassgitarren.

Das daraus entstehende Gemisch aus Melancholie, Entfremdung, Euphorie und Hoffnung beschleicht uns nicht nur, weil Monomatik verdammt genau wissen, wie Indietronic funktioniert. Es beschleicht uns auch, weil es sich bei dieser EP nicht nur um ihre neuste, sondern auch vorerst letzte Veröffentlichung handelt. Aber da wir ebenfalls drei und eins zusammenzählen können, weigern wir uns einfach, diesen Umstand auch nur irgendwie für zutreffender als das vierte Monomatik Mitglied für real zu halten. Oder den fünften Beatle. Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt.

Ich finde es toll, dass hier mal nicht auf die geschmackssicheren "Neu!" Bezug genommen wird sondern der Pferd Krautrock von der (vermeintlich) uncoolen "La Düsseldorf"-Seite aufgezäumt wird. Mut zur Melodie, Groove durch Repetition, Mutterwitz, alles drin alles dran. Super.

Tolle neue Tracks mit vielen neuen Aspekten. Muss ich noch ein paar mal richtig durchhören. Aufhören gilt nicht!

Nach dem ich die Tränchen getrocknet habe, muss ich nun doch noch loswerden das wir hier das meiner Meinung nach sogar beste Werk dieser illustren Musikkapelle vorliegen haben. Highlights sind Track 1 und 2, speziell das arsch coole geflötetet Thema bei Nummer 1 hat mich vom Stuhl geschubst.

Was soll ich noch groß sagen, ich hoffe es geht weiter, wie auch immer!
