I was looking around for some new music, the kind I that can do some work to, not really where I have to stay up until 3am in a frenzy to finish, but more even stuff. The 5th Realm from Zengineers fits the bill quite nicely.

The album is classified by the label as Drum and Bass, while they are right, the album could also fall into Downtempo as well. There are 12 tracks on the release and all are of equal quality and carry the same feel, but what’s more impressive is that the tracks are pretty long, for the most part. Both qualities are pretty important to me. (To tell a little secret, I tend to shy away from something with less than 5 tracks or 30min-a personality flaw? possibly…)

The 5th Realm is constructed with all of the nuances of D&B, yet it turns out to be more relaxed. Zengineers do a very good job of putting in just enough D&B flavor while letting the tracks breathe. There is a really nice balance between letting a groove go versus the need for inflection – it takes a steady hand. Also, sprinkled throughout the album are some really nicely done vocal tracks that do a really nice job of punctuating the release.

Maybe it doesn’t need punctuation as the Zengineers have done a great job of crafting songs with just the right amounts, – something that apparently is difficult to do in the genre.

Mein Lieblings-Netaudio-Label iD:EOLOGY hat nach einer kleinen Pause endlich ein neues Release am Start: Zengineers neues Album “The 5th Realm” ist eine astreine Drum & Bass LP mit Stilelementen aus Jazz, Downbeat, Ambient und Weltmusik, angetrieben von ausgereiften und treibenden Beats. Dieses Album läuft bei mir seit Tagen im Loop und passt bestens zu meiner Vermutung, dass das Genre D&B wieder stark im kommen ist.

Drum´n Bass ist hier für uns Deutsche so eine Sache - so richtig durchsetzten konnte sich der Sound hier bei uns nie. Wir stehen halt von Natur aus auf 4/4 Beat. Ab & zu kommt aber mal eine VÖ mit ungeraden Beats die man sich trotzdem mal anhören sollte - wie dieses neue Album von den Zenginiirs. Hier gibt es die unterscheidlichsten Arten von gebrochenen Beats , die meisten in einer sehr relaxten Atmo die eher zum zuhören als zum abzappeln gedacht sind. Wer also die Sachen von LTJ Bukem zu Hause hat der sollte sich auf jeden Fall mal das hier anhören , denn das ist richtig gut.

Zengineers - The 5th Realm

English: If you blindly believe in progress, you unwillingly take one step forward and two steps back sometimes. While the notion that everything can and must always be infinitely enhanced and maximized has been firmly established in modern western societies, the individual often fails to observe the inherent contradiction of this idea as well as the corroding effect that a life within a constant comparative has on the soul.

With their fifth album in total, Zengineers carefully and consciously take two steps back from everyday life and contemplate what becomes visible when the veil of reality drops. Following them in their tracks, your gaze might be opened for a realm of existence which is being populated by ever-hungry ghosts. Beings that are condemned to vegetate in eternal balefulness due to their insatiable desires. What might be mistaken solely for social critcism laced with buddhism also emblematizes accurately the tragic of interpersonal relationships as well as the artist's obsession to perfect his own creations. Drawing energy from contemplation, Zengineers carefully and consciously now take one step forward and enrich their specific mixture of drum'n'bass, worldmusic, downbeat and pop with live elements of guitars and percussion which add a psychedelic facet to the eclectic interplay of intricate, aggressive beats and neat, blissful song-passages.

So to take two steps back in terms of progress might actually help to take a step forward in terms of awareness. And that in turn might change your everyday life in a way that in terms of contentment and social behaviour, you might even be taking two steps forward and only one step back from now on. Namaste.

Deutsch: Wer blind an den Fortschritt glaubt, macht manchmal ungewollt einen Schritt vorwärts und zwei zurück. Während sich die Vorstellung, alles sei stets und zwingend unendlich steigerbar, in modernen westlichen Gesellschaften fest etabliert hat, übersieht das Individuum zumeist nicht nur den inneren Widerspruch dieser Idee, sondern auch den korrodierenden Effekt, den ein Leben im fortwährenden Komparativ auf die eigene Seele hat.

Mit ihrem insgesamt fünften Album entfernen sich Zengineers überlegt und bewusst um zwei Schritte vom alltäglichen Leben und betrachten das, was sichtbar wird, wenn der Schleier der Wirklichkeit fällt. Folgt man ihren Spuren, so öffnet sich der Blick für einen Daseinsbereich, der von ewig hungrigen Geistern bevölkert wird. Wesen, deren unstillbares Verlangen sie zu einem Vegetieren in beständigem Unglück verdammt. Was fälschlich allein auf buddhistisch aufgeladene Sozialkritik reduziert werden könnte, versinnbildlicht neben der Tragik zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen zugleich treffend die Getriebenheit des Künstlers von dem Ziel der Vervollkommnung des eigenen Schaffens. Mit der aus der Betrachtung gewonnenen Energie gehen Zengineers überlegt und bewusst nun einen Schritt voran und bereichern ihre spezifische Mischung aus Drum'n'Bass, Weltmusik, Downbeat und Pop um Live-Elemente von Gitarren und Percussion, die dem eklektischen Wechselspiel aus vertrackten, aggressiven Beats und eingängigen, kontemplativen Songpassagen eine psychedelische Facette hinzufügen.

In Sachen Fortschritt zwei Schritte zurück zu machen, kann also tatsächlich einen Schritt nach vorn in Sachen Erkenntnis bedeuten. Und das wiederum kann die Alltagswirklichkeit so verändern, dass man in Sachen eigener Zufriedenheit und Sozialverhalten in Zukunft sogar zwei Schritte vorwärts und nur einen zurück macht. Namaste.
